Short answer
In the IGOverlay extension open Integrations → Comment webhook, enter an https:// endpoint and allow access when Chrome asks. Every captured Instagram Live comment is then POSTed to it as JSON.
Set up the webhook
- 1
Open Integrations
Click the IGOverlay icon in Chrome to open the dashboard, then go to Integrations.
- 2
Enter your endpoint
It must use https:// (http://localhost is allowed for testing).
- 3
Allow access
Chrome asks permission for that one host. The extension can't reach any other server you haven't approved.
- 4
Send a test
Press Send test to POST a sample payload (with "test": true) and check your server replies with 2xx.
Payload
One request per comment, sent with Content-Type: application/json while capture is running.
{
"session_id": "live-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx",
"username": "alex_streams",
"comment": "This overlay is so clean 🔥",
"avatar_url": "https://…/profile.jpg",
"ts": 1767225600000
}Things to know
- Requests come from the streamer's browser, so they only fire while the extension is capturing a Live.
- Delivery is best-effort with no retries, so respond quickly and queue work on your side.
- ts is a Unix timestamp in milliseconds.
- Works with Zapier, Make, n8n, Pipedream or your own endpoint.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official Instagram Live comments API?
Instagram doesn't provide a public API for reading Live comments in real time. IGOverlay reads them from your own Live window in Chrome instead.
Can I use the webhook for giveaways?
Yes. Collect usernames and comments on your server, filter for a keyword, and pick a winner.
Can I use plain http?
Only for http://localhost. Public endpoints must use https.
